I’m really excited to bring this little DIY project to you.
I was browsing on Pinterest the other day (as one does for inspiration.. hee hee!) and came across these rather Nordic/Bohemian wooden bead shelves. I absolutely fell in love with them as I thought they’d make a cute addition to any child’s bedroom. However, when I came across the prices on Etsy, they were costing anything from £30+. I just thought this was a little too much for just a piece of wood and some beads. So as usual, I got my creative hat on and started DIY-ing them myself. It really is such a simple project and the kids will just love them!
They make for a lovely decor, a perfect addition to your home decor. It doesn’t need to be specifically for a child’s bedroom, in fact once you change the bead colours around, it makes for a lovely Pinterest inspired shelf for any room. The reason I mention a child’s shelf here is due to the fact that the ones I was looking at were specifically for children.
Moreover, I will be making one for my guest room which I’m really looking forward to designing. If you’d like me to share more designs, just let me know below.
What you need:
– A twine string rope
– Wooden beads
– Spray paint (optional)
– Colourful yarn for tassels
– Wooden plank
– Hot glue gun/scissors
– Drill machine
Firstly, you need to find a wooden plank which is going to be the base for your main shelf. You can either buy a new one online or from a craft shop, or better still find an old reclaimed wood to make it even more unique and interesting.
Of course you may be wondering ‘Where can I find old reclaimed Wood near me?’ Well, if you live near a countryside then there’s tons of dilapidated barns and farmhouses that have collapsed with age. You can grab a lovely wooden plank as there’s always so many dotted around.
However, it’s become even more easier to shop for anything online these days. So a quick snoop in any of the craft store (Pound shop/The Works) and you can find one very easily there. I brought mine from a local DIY store nearby my home.
OK, now that we have our wooden plank, we need to work on what coloured beads we want to use for this project. If it’s for a baby girl’s room, then pink or any other similar shade is a lovely option. You can switch this over to blue for a baby boy. It doesn’t need to be specifically pink or blue, you can choose whichever colour suits the decor of the room. The world is your oyster at this point. Just get creative!
I’ve designed it keeping children in mind, but you can design it however you like. It’ll look really nice in an office space where you can use neutral colours instead. The options are endless. Please use this post as a rough guideline but you can design it anyway you prefer.
Before, we get started with arranging the beads, make sure the wooden shelf has 4 holes drilled on each corner. If you can’t do this yourself with the drill machine, get someone to do this for you. I asked hubby for some help as he’s the more hands on guy.. So lucky to have him around me. Ha! 😁
Next, you need to arrange how many beads you’d like to place in the twine rope. I preferred to keep it neat and use a mixture of 3 beads with a variation in size. I think this makes it a little mroe interesting. You can put as many or as less beads, it’s entirely up to you.
By the end if it, it should look something like this. Oh, by the way I did spray paint my beads as my shop only had plain wooden ones in store. I just grabbed some spray paint and the end result is below. I was very pleased with the final look. Also its great for personalising it to your decor at home.
However, you can buy coloured wooden beads online. I didn’t have the option as I had already purchased mine sadly. Also I wanted gold beads and couldn’t find any so I thought a spray paint would be a better option for me. I’d love to do a silver one for next shelf. I think it’ll look hella festive, don’t you think?
Please make sure to measure the twine rope according to how long you’d like the shelf to be. Once you’re happy and have the desired length just cut off the excess rope.
Next, you need to put the beads in the twine rope. However, make sure you put the twine through the bottom of the hole and push it upwards first. Once you’ve inserted the twine through the wooden hole, make sure to tie a strong knot at the end to secure it. This is really important or else you’ll be left with only a rope with no option to add the beads or tassels to it. Once you’ve pulled the twine through the hole, string the beads to it.. I really hope this is making sense.. Darn, I didn’t realise how difficult it is to explain via pictures.. A video would have been so much easier right?! Does it mean it’s time for YouTube.. Hmm I probably guess so! 🤔 Nah, I think it’s only me digressing yet again. OK back to the tutorial..
As you’ll know, in one of my precious posts (the Dream-catcher post), I have explained how you make these yarn tassels. I won’t repeat it again here but please just visit that post and everything is clearly explained there. They’re honestly super easy!
I chose pink as you guys know how much I love this colour. You need to make 4 of these tassels so that they hang on from the bottom of the shelf. It makes for a really interesting final look. This is optional, but I just love tassels so had to use them. If you prefer, you can you use pom-poms too!
I literally got my hot glue gun and glued these tassels to each one of the corner beneath the shelf. I also added a small wooden bead to it, just to make it a little more secure and neat. It just looks really pretty in my opinion.
OK, so once you’ve followed the steps, the final look should be quite similar to the one below.
Now please feel free to add your twist to it. If you want to add pom-poms or other cute stuff, then can entirely do that. You can also personalise it depending on the time of the year. I think they make great baby shower gifts for a friend or family member. It’s just so easy to make and is such a cute personalised gift.
Top tip: You can also colour the wooden shelf if you like. I left mine as it is but it’ll look really pretty.
Finally, you’re ready to start decorating it with cute little things to place on the shelf.
Now, all you need is a super cute corner to place this beauty on.
Wasn’t this such a quick little DIY to bring into your interior space. What’s amazing about them is that you can make them any height you want, super affordable and cute!
I’d love to see how you bring your shelves to life. If you do try it out, then do share it with me. Why not share your creations with me on Instagram so that I can see your renditions! ❤️
I hope you enjoyed this post. Do let me know if you’d like me to make anything specific at all . I’m open to all ideas and suggestions.
